Dr. Benjamin Merkle believes Big Education (Big Ed) is serving the federal government, not the students or parents. He shared this take during the Oct. 13 episode of “The Sentinel Report” on Brighteon.TV, hosted by Alex Newman of the New American magazine.
“The No. 1 revenue stream for colleges and universities right now is the federal government, and that is propping the whole thing up. Since [the government is] the one that is paying the bill, that means [it] is the main customer. It’s not really the student or the parents,” said Merkle, the president of New Saint Andrews College (NSAC) in Idaho.
According to the senior fellow of theology, Big Ed pertains to the majority of higher education institutions that are essentially receiving federal money. This means that the federal government “gets to call the shots” and “steer the direction” of education in these institutions. Merkle also expressed belief that the government has hijacked corporations and institutions by means of federal money. Newman agreed, citing Italian dictator Benito Mussolini’s definition of fascism as a merger of state and corporate power. The “Sentinel Report” host added that no matter who is in charge, people are now looking at governments and corporations that are merging and wielding power against the people.
Newman also noted how NSAC refuses to take federal money and bow down to the government. In response, Merkle said the college aims to graduate “free” students.
“We want to leave our graduates free – free from debt; free from those kinds of entanglements; [and] fee from federal ideology of unbelief. But there’s also some profound freedoms that we’re missing in higher education, and one of them is learning how to think like a free man,” said the NSAC president.
“We’re also aimed at that most fundamental freedom of all, which is freedom in Christ. We want our graduates to leave here ready to serve Christ for their whole life. That’s the most profound and important freedom, and I think all the other freedoms kind of trickle down from that.”
Newman agreed, noting that the whole education system today – from K-12 government schools to higher education institutions – is turning children away from the Bible, God, family and country. Merkle responded by saying that NSAC teaches its students “classical” liberal arts education for them to know how to think, act and lead. The college is more interested in forming their graduates to be free thinkers and entrepreneurs and to go into the wide diversity of fields and careers.
In contrast, the federally-funded education system teaches people to think with a slave mentality instead of a free person’s. American universities are teaching vocational certification, which is all about getting a diploma and a job. Given that the government funds the schools and issues certificates for people to get jobs, it has also gained control of the workforce.
According to Merkle, one of the most important things that colleges need to do is stop saying that “a college degree is a necessary ticket for getting a job.” The myth of people needing a certificate or diploma in order to be employable is a lie and every person can see through it now.
“The only thing that has happened as a result of it is that we have replaced what used to be an education, which was learning how to think critically – with vocational certification, which is a very low level of thinking.”
